メールマガジンでは latitude を取り上げました。

緯度か経度か、覚えていますか？（笑）

[latitude]
the distance north or south of the equator (=the imaginary line around the middle of the world) , measured in degrees

で、問題になったのが equator ってなんなのか？ってことでしたね。

もっとも、カッコ内の説明で想像つくと思いますが、これを英英辞典で見てみましょう。

an imaginary line drawn around the middle of the Earth that is exactly the same distance from the North Pole and the South Pole

The equator is an imaginary line around the middle of the earth at an equal distance from the North Pole and the South Pole.

北極点、南極点から同じ距離にある場所ということで、これは赤道のことですね。

赤道から北、または南へどれだけ離れているかということを示すのはもちろん「緯度」です。

となれば、「経度」を見ておかないわけにはいきません。

幸い、latitude を調べたときに、こんな一言がありました。

なるほど。longitude か。

the distance east or west of a particular meridian (=imaginary line along the Earth’s surface from the North Pole to the South Pole) , measured in degrees

The longitude of a place is its distance to the west or east of a line passing through Greenwich. Compare latitude.

これが「経度」の説明ですね。

「緯度」の説明で equator だったところが、今度は meridian となっています。

これはもうわかりますよね。

子午線のことですね。
