切手を貼るとき

メールマガジンでは「切手」を取り上げました。
子供の頃、推理クイズみたいなのが好きだった私としては、切手というと「裏の糊の部分に毒が塗ってあって、切手を貼ろうとして裏をなめた人が殺される」という、今思えば実にチャチなトリックが頭に浮かびます。
でも、私にとってはその印象が非常に強かったのか、今でも切手の裏をなめることができません（笑）。
別に命を狙われるような心当たりもないのですが（笑）。
さて、その真偽はともかく、切手の説明文に出てきたのが envelope でした。

手紙を送るときに使う「封筒」です。
読んだそのまま・・・という感じですが、あえていえば rectangular が見慣れない・・・かもしれません。
メールマガジンではこれまでに何度か出てきていると思いますが、久しぶりなので見てみましょう。

長方形です。
長方形が出てきたら、やっぱりこれも見ておかなくてはいけませんね。

rectangle を見ると、５年ほど前に
三角、 正方形、 長方形、 五角形、 六角形、 七角形、 八角形のイラストを書いた
フラッシュカードを見せ、”Repeat after me!”と言って小学校の授業で小学生に
triangul, square, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagonal
と言わせていた某県のオーストラリア人AETを思い出します。
当時は、三角～長方形までならわかるけど、それ以上覚えて意味あんの？と不思議な思いがしました。
日本語だと数字が順にあがっていくだけですけれど、英語だとちょっと違いますからねぇ。
根っこは一緒だとしても・・・。
