メールマガジンではキューブを取り上げました。

あ、そういえば、そういう名前の車もありましたよね。

あれって、後ろのトランクルームのドアが、上じゃなくて横に開くタイプのように見えるんですけれど、実際に開いているところを見たことがないのです。

ま、それはともかく、キューブは立方体のことですが、もうひとつ算数に関連した意味があります。

今日はこれを英英辞典で見てみましょう。

the number you get when you multiply a number by itself twice, for example 4 x 4 x 4 = 64, so the cube of 4 is 64

The cube of a number is another number that is produced by multiplying the first number by itself twice. For example, the cube of 2 is 8.

具体的な例が出ているからすぐお分かりですね。

4 to the power of 3 is 64.

ともいいます。

それでは・・・

そう、100の3乗で「1,000,000」です。
ちなみに2乗は・・・ご存知ですね。

3乗が立方体なら2乗は正方形ということで、squareです。

それでは、逆に「平方根（なつかしいですね）」は？

「ルート９は・・・」なんて言いましたよね。

そう、ルートです。

英語だと square root となります。
