今日は記念すべき第200号のメールマガジンとなりました。

そこで扱ったのが passport。

パスポートを一番よく使う場所の一つが入出国審査ですね。

ということで、immigration を見てみましょう。

さらに「移民」という言葉にも注目してみます。

the place at an airport, sea port etc where officials check the documents of everyone entering the country

Immigration or immigration control is the place at a port, airport, or international border where officials check the passports of people who wish to come into the country.

これが旅行の際に出てくる immigration ですね。

英英辞典にはこんな説明もあります。

[immigration]
the process of entering another country in order to live there permanently
(LDOCE)

Immigration is the coming of people into a country in order to live and work there.
(COBUILD)

LDOCE には emigration も参照せよとありますので、見てみましょう。

[emigration]
to leave your own country in order to live in another country
(LDOCE)

似ているようでちょっと違いますね。

あ、m が1個か2個かということも違うのですが。

なんか難しそうなときには、例によって子供用の辞典で調べてみましょう。わかりやすく書いてあるかもしれません。immigrate と emigrate が載っています。

[immigrate]
If someone immigrates, they come to live permanently in a country that is not their own.

[emigrate]
If you emigrate, you leave your native country and go to live permanently in another one.

日本語だと両方とも「移民」と言ってしまいますが、immigration と emigration は移っていく方向が違います。

immigration は他の国からやってくる、emigration は他の国に行く。こんな感じですね。

最近は「移住」という方が普通になってきたような気もしますけれど、それも「海外に移住する」という感じです。入ってくることに対応する言葉や感覚があまりありません。

他の国から日本に来るということ、それを受け入れるということが少ないからかもしれませんね。
