メールマガジンでは「大陸」を取り上げました。

continent でしたね。

大陸というとアフリカやアメリカはもちろん、アジアやヨーロッパも・・・って習ったような気がしますが、今ではアジアとヨーロッパはユーラシア大陸として一つにして扱われていて、ヨーロッパはユーラシア大陸の大きな半島部分という扱いだそうです。

ま、それはともかく、英英辞典にはいくつかの大陸が載っているので、今日はそれを見てみましょう。

[Africa]
a continent (=one of the seven main areas of land on the Earth)    that is south of the Mediterranean Sea, and west of Asia and the Indian Ocean

昔は暗黒大陸っていう名前で呼ばれたこともあったって習いましたよね。

[Dark Continent]
a name given to Africa by Europeans in the 19th century. The name meant that Africa was then an unknown area to Europeans, but it is now considered an offensive name.

次にアジアを見てみましょう。

[Asia]
the world’s largest continent (=one of the seven main areas of land), which includes the countries of the Middle East and the countries between the Ural Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, such as India, China, Japan, and part of Russia

Ural Mountains は、一応ヨーロッパとアジアの境とされている「ウラル山脈」です。

もちろんヨーロッパの説明文にも出てくるでしょうね。

[Europe]
the continent that is north of the Mediterranean and goes as far east as the Ural Mountains in Russia

Mediterranean というのは何のことだかわかりますか？

ヨーロッパの地図を思い出しながら考えてみてくださいね。

ええい、ついでだからアメリカも行くか。

[North America]
the third largest continent in the world, consisting of Canada and the United States of America, as well as Mexico, Central America, Greenland, and other smaller islands

[South America]
the fourth-largest continent    in the world, between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, which goes from the southern coast of the Caribbean Sea (in the north) to Tierra del Fuego (in the south). It includes the Andes Mountains, the Amazon River, and large areas of tropical rainforest, as well as many large cities. Its largest country is Brazil. The main language in Brazil is Portuguese, but in all the other countries of South America, the main language is Spanish.
