毎日読む英英辞典

メールマガジンでは「手錠」を取り上げました。

handcuffs と複数形にして使うということでしたね。

で、一般的には、悪いことをして逮捕されたときに使うものなので （←なにか含みがあるのか（笑））、今日はその「逮捕」を英英辞典で見てみましょう。

[arrest]
if the police arrest someone, the person is taken to a police station because the police think they have done something illegal

If the police arrest you, they take charge of you and take you to a police station, because they believe you may have committed a crime.

これは動詞としての説明文ですが、逮捕する、勾留するってことですね。

この記事のタイトルのように、「You’re under arrest.」というと、「お前を逮捕する」ということです。

ま、バカボン世代は「タイホする～」というほうが親しみやすいかもしれません。

ところで、英英辞典には「house arrest も見てね」 とあります。

to be kept as a prisoner by a government, staying inside your house rather than in a prison

If someone is under house arrest, they are officially ordered not to leave their home, because they are suspected of being involved in an illegal activity.

自宅監禁ってことなのですが、普通自宅監禁っていうと犯罪者が罪もない人を自宅に閉じ込めて外に出さないようにしてしまう犯罪のような感じがします。

どちらかというとスーチー氏やブット氏のケースのように、政府がその政府の方針に反対する活動家の自宅を取り囲んで外に出さないようにしてしまう「自宅軟禁」というのが正しいですかね。
