メールマガジンでは「葉」を取り上げました。

英英辞典の説明文に出てきた stem と branch のうち、stem についてはメールマガジンで簡単にご説明しました。

こちらでは branch を見てみましょう。

[branch]
a part of a tree that grows out from the trunk (=main stem) and that has leaves, fruit, or smaller branches growing from it

The branches of a tree are the parts that grow out from its trunk and have leaves, flowers, or fruit growing on them.

trunk から出ている部分。

trunk というのは、LDOCE では「main stem」と注釈が出ています。

幹から出ているのは「枝」ですね。

これ自体は以前メールマガジンに出てきましたし、trunk もブログで取り上げています。

ということで、今日は別の意味の branch を取り上げます。

[branch]
a local business, shop etc that is part of a larger business etc
(LDOCE)

A branch of a business or other organization is one of the offices, shops, or groups which belong to it and which are located in different places.
(COBUILD)

ここで出てくる business は、ビジネスというよりは「会社」という組織のことです。

大きな会社、お店の一部で、他の場所にあるのは・・・支店ですね。

それでは、次はなんでしょう。

[branch]
a group of members of a family who all have the same ancestors
(LDOCE)

A branch of your family is a group of its members who are descended from one particular person.
(COBUILD)

祖先が同じ・・・これは分家です。

ネジとヒナタの関係ですね。

最後にもう一つ。

[branch]
a smaller less important part of a river, road, or railway that leads away from the larger more important part of it
(LDOCE)

川や道路、線路が分かれたということで、これは支線、支流といったあたりですね。

ということで、branch のイメージはまさに「枝分かれ」ということでした。
