メールマガジンでは注射器を取り上げました。

私はそれほど苦手ではありませんが、針がとにかく苦手っていう人も多いですよね。

ということで、今日は needle を英英辞典で見てみましょう。

まずは注射器の needle から。

a very thin, pointed steel tube at the end of a syringe, which is pushed into your skin to put a drug or medicine into your body or to take out blood

A needle is a thin hollow metal rod with a sharp point, which is part of a medical instrument called a syringe. It is used to put a drug into someone’s body, or to take blood out.

これ、絶対そのうちメールマガジンのほうで出題したいですよね。

ま、2年後くらいに・・・といいつつ、トリ年なので今日の夕方にはすっかり忘れ去っていますが（笑）。

で、これは針は針ですが syringe の一方についているとあります。

syringe は当然注射器ですね。

A syringe is a small tube with a thin hollow needle at the end. Syringes are used for putting liquids into things and for taking liquids out, for example for injecting drugs or for taking blood from someone’s body.

血を抜いたりヤクをうったり（おい！）するときに使います。

おばあちゃんの針

さて、それでは縫い物で使う針のほうを見てみましょう。

A needle is a small, very thin piece of polished metal which is used for sewing. It has a sharp point at one end and a hole in the other for a thread to go through.

小学校のとき、家庭科で使いましたね。

男性だってボタンの一つや二つは自分でつけられなくちゃいけませんよ。

polish というのが出てきましたが、これは「磨く」という意味です。金属を磨いて光らせるというような感じですが、そこから「上品になる」とか「洗練された」という意味にもなります。
