メールマガジンではペンギンを取り上げました。

英英辞典の説明文に出てきた Antarctic が今日のテーマ。

メールマガジンではあえて訳さずにおきましたが・・・。

でも、ペンギンといえば＊＊ですよね。

これはもちろん南極のことですね。

形容詞だと「南極の」という意味になります。

それでは北極は？

南極が Antarctic なら北極は？

当然思いますよね。

北極は Arctic です。

The Arctic is the area of the world around the North Pole. It is extremely cold and there is very little light in winter and very little darkness in summer.

COBUILD の説明文が、南極に比べてちょっと詳しいのはなぜでしょう（笑）。

北極グマを英語でいうと

the Arctic Ocean は北極海です。当然 the Antarctic Ocean は南極海です。

北極海というのはよく聞きますが、なんだか南極海というよりは南氷洋っていうほうが馴染み深い気がするのは私だけでしょうか。

で、北極グマは arctic bear か・・・とおもいきや。

南極グマというのはいないので、polar bear でいいのかもしれませんね。
