メールマガジンでは chain を取り上げました。
いろいろと面白い取り上げ方もできるのですが、今日は chain から始まる言葉をいくつか見てみましょう。
まずは普通に鎖カンケー
まずは簡単なヤツから。
a set of chains that are fastened around the wheels of a car so that it can drive over snow without slipping

タイヤの周りに・・・あと、雪なんて出てきました。
これは snow chain ですね。
つながっているイメージで
[chain smoke]
to smoke cigarettes one immediately after another

Someone who chain-smokes smokes cigarettes or cigars continuously.

タバコを立て続けに吸うことですね。
そんな人のことはもちろん chain smoker です。
[chain letter]
a letter sent to several people asking them to send a copy of the letter to several more people

A chain letter is a letter, often with a promise of money, that is sent to several people who send copies on to several more people. Chain letters are illegal in some countries.

幸福だか不幸だかわかりませんが、「同じ文面で10人に手紙を書いてください」っていうヤツですね。

a chemical or nuclear reaction which produces energy and causes more reactions of the same kind

A chain reaction is a series of chemical changes, each of which causes the next.

次々と起こる化学反応。これは連鎖反応っていうのですね。

アメリカのアニメだと、よく囚人がこれを足につけていますよね。
鎖のついた鉄球で、自由に動けなくする道具です。
[chain gang]
a group of prisoners chained together to work outside their prison
(LDOCE)
In the United States, a chain gang is a group of prisoners who are chained together to do work outside their prison. Chain gangs existed especially in former times.

これもアニメなどで見かけます。
囚人が一列になって、みんなつながれて歩いていたり何か労働をしていたり。
こんな「一連の囚人」を chain gang といいます。 a chain gang とあることからわかるように、一まとまりの囚人たちを指します。
ということで、今日はこれくらいにしておきましょう。
chain というのは要するに鎖のようにつながっているというイメージということですね。
それが囚人のように「つながれている」ということもあるわけですが。
