儀式について

メールマガジン「毎日読む英英辞典」では、spellを取り上げました。
その中に ceremony という単語が出てきましたので、今日はこれを見てみましょう。
[ceremony]
an important social or religious event, when a traditional set of actions is performed in a formal way
(LDOCE)
A ceremony is a formal event such as a wedding.
(COBUILD)
この記事のタイトルどおり「儀式」ということです。
結婚式のように華やかなイメージもありますが、spell の説明で出てきた魔法の儀式のようなものもあります。
formal と出てきますから、要は「形式」が大切なのですね。
ちなみに、新しく道路が開通したときなどのテープカットも tape cutting ceremony といいます。
