メールマガジンではメリーゴーラウンドを取り上げました。

今日は、merry-go-round の項目に出てきたもう一つの説明文を見てみましょう。

そして、アメリカ英語、イギリス英語では他の言い方もありましたよね。それについてももう少し詳しく見てみます。

a series of similar events that happen very quickly one after another

You can refer to a continuous series of activities as a merry-go-round.

a series of 〜〜で、一続きのってことですね。COBUILD でも同じように使われています。

次から次へと起こる一連の出来事のこと。それを merry-go-round という・・・。

ちょっと難しいですが、日本語だと「めまぐるしさ」「忙しさ」というところでしょうか。

さて、メリーゴーラウンドは、アメリカ英語では carousel、イギリス英語では roundabout ともいうとメールマガジンに書きました。

これらの単語には、めまぐるしさという意味はあるのでしょうか・・・。

A carousel is a large circular machine with seats, often in the shape of animals or cars. People can sit on it and go round and round for fun.

英文を読む練習になりました？これはメリーゴーラウンドですね（笑）。

知りたいのは他の意味です。

At an airport, a carousel is a moving surface from which passengers can collect their luggage.

ん？ airport？

空港でメリーゴーラウンドのようにぐるぐる回っているもの・・・これは・・・なんというんだろう。荷物を受け取るところにあるベルトコンベアがありますよね。あれのことです。

あれって、税関よりも緊張しません？もし荷物が届かなかったらどうしよう・・・って。

[roundabout]
a raised circular area where three or more roads join together and which cars must drive around
(LDOCE)

A roundabout is a circular structure in the road at a place where several roads meet. You drive round it until you come to the road that you want.
(COBUILD)

これは、ご存知の方はご存知。

道路が交差するところで、道路が環状になっていて、そこをまわりながら出たいほうの道路へ出るというタイプの交差点です。

図で見たほうがわかりやすいですね。

英英辞典に出ている通り、アメリカ英語では traffic circle といいます。
