メールマガジンではヘリコプターを取り上げました。

テレビでホバーコプターという面白そうなラジコンを見つけたので、今日のテーマはこれにしようと思っただけなのですが。

実は、ホバーコプターを見て、最初にタケコプターをイメージしたのですが、さすがに英英辞典にはありませんのでヘリコプターにしてみました。

ま、ホバーコプター自体はヘリコプターというよりは UFO に近い気がしますが。

さて、今日はヘリコプターの説明に出てきた blade を見ておきましょう。

the flat wide part of an object that pushes against air or water

プロペラの刃のことですね。

COBUILD には rotor blade: see rotor と出ていましたので、rotor を見てみると・・・。

The rotors or rotor blades of a helicopter are the four long, flat, thin pieces of metal on top of it which go round and lift it off the ground.

ズバリですね。

もちろん LDOCE にもあります。

ではプロペラは・・・。

[propeller]
a piece of equipment consisting of two or more blades that spin around, which makes an aircraft or ship move

A propeller is a device with blades which is attached to a boat or aircraft. The engine makes the propeller spin round and causes the boat or aircraft to move.
