小数を英語で説明しよう

メールマガジンでは round を取り上げました。
数字を「丸める」ということでしたね。
最も近い整数にするということで、説明文に whole number というのが出てきました。
となれば、やっぱり小数を見ないわけにはいかないでしょう。
小数は decimal といいます。どんな説明文になっているのでしょう。

a fraction (=a number less than 1) that is shown as a full stop followed by the number of tenths, hundredths etc. The numbers 0.5, 0.175, and 0.661 are decimals

A decimal is a fraction that is written in the form of a dot followed by one or more numbers which represent tenths, hundredths, and so on: for example .5, .51, .517.

とりあえず小数というと0.5が例としてでてくるものなんでしょうか（笑）。
それはさておき、fraction というのは小さな部分、断片ということです。数学だと分数です。
点があって、そのあとに数字が並んでいて・・・。分数をそのような形で表しているのですね。
点っていうのはもちろん小数点のことですね。

ちなみに、分数の横棒のことは括線（かつせん）といいます。
その上の数字が分子、下の数字が分母ですね（意味ありげ（笑））。
