メールマガジンでは launch を取り上げました。

なかなか動詞を取り上げることはないのですが。

これを書いているまさに今、打ち上げまでのカウントダウンが進んでいます（といってもまだ2時間ほどありますが）。

そこで、カウントダウンを英英辞典でさくっと調べてみましょう。

the period of time before something happens, such as a spacecraft being launched, when someone counts backwards until the event happens

in reverse order で「逆に」ってことですね。

カウントダウンといえば、私がすぐに思い出すのは EUROPE の THE FINAL COUNTDOWN でしょうか。この曲名は知らなくても、イントロを聞けば誰もが「あぁ！」と思うはずのあの曲ですね。

歴史に残るこのアルバム名をクリックしていただくと3曲目に CARRIE という曲があるのですが、学生時代には私はこの曲を歌っていたのですよ。しかもギターを持って（笑）。

ある年のライヴでは、BON JOVI と WHITESNAKE と HELLOWEEN と、そしてこの EUROPE を歌うという無謀というか大胆不敵というか身の程知らずというようなことをやっていました・・・（遠い目）。

以前「ソニック」の記事でセガのゲームキャラクターである「ソニック」がLDOCEにでていましたよね。

europe を調べたら、バンドのヨーロッパも出ているかもしれないと思ったのですが、やっぱりでていませんでした（当たり前）。

ビートルズとローリング・ストーンズは載っているのにね〜。
