FBI にはなぜ the がつくのか

先週取り上げた FBI とか NASA の説明文で、FBI には the がついているのに、NASA にはついていませんでした。
メールマガジンでは文法についてあまりふれていないのですが、今回はもしかしたら「おぉ！」と思うかもしれないので、ちょっとだけ。
NASA にはホントに the がついていなかったっけ？
一応、説明文を見てみましょう。
[CIA]
The CIA is the government organization in the United States that collects secret information about other countries. CIA is an abbreviation for `Central Intelligence Agency’.
[FBI]
The FBI is a government agency in the United States that investigates crimes in which a national law is broken or in which the country’s security is threatened. FBI is an abbreviation for `Federal Bureau of Investigation’.
[NASA]
NASA is the American government organization concerned with spacecraft and space travel. NASA is an abbreviation for `National Aeronautics and Space Administration’.
ホントですね。
他にも見てみましょう。

The UN is the same as the United Nations.
[BBC]
The BBC is a British organization which broadcasts programmes on radio and television. BBC is an abbreviation for `British Broadcasting Corporation’.
[USA]
The USA is an abbreviation for the United States of America.
[OPEC]
OPEC is an organization of countries that produce oil. It tries to develop a common policy and system of prices. OPEC is an abbreviation for `Organization of Petroleum-Exporting Countries’.
[NATO]
NATO is an international organization which consists of the USA, Canada, Britain, and other European countries, all of whom have agreed to support one another if they are attacked. NATO is an abbreviation for `North Atlantic Treaty Organization’.
まとめてみると
theがつく・・・CIA, FBI, BBC, UN, USA
theがつかない・・・NASA, OPEC, NATO
文字数か？
う〜ん、今のところはそれも否定できないのですが（笑）、これは読み方によります。
the がつくのは、アルファベットをそのまま読むパターン。
ナサ、オペック、ナトーみたいに、アルファベットを読まないのが the がつかないパターンですね。
ということで、組織名を略している場合、アルファベットで読んでいるかどうかによって the がつくかつかないということを判断していいようですね。

凄く勉強になりました。
「Japanに冠詞がつかないで、ＵＳＡに付くのは固有名詞であるJapanに対して、USAは"States"という名詞の事だから」という説を何かの本で読みましたが、でもそれだけの理由ならＯＰＥＣ（Organization)も付く筈ですものね。
こういう分け方もあったのですね。

小難しいことはあまりやりたくないのですが、これはちょっと面白いかもということで、定冠詞の話題をちょっと出してみました。
「それじゃぁ組織って、どこまでが組織なの？」という話も出てきそうですが、まぁ一つの話のネタってことで。

いえいえ、「おぉ！」でも「へぇ〜」でも構わないので、ちょっとだけでも印象に残れば嬉しいです〜。
それにしても、いざとなるとこういった略称ってなかなか出てこないものですね・・・。
