メールマガジンでは sharp（鋭利な）を取り上げました。

いろいろな意味があるのですが、今日は「＃」を見てみましょう。

音楽に出てくる記号ですね。

Sharp is used after a letter representing a musical note to show that the note should be played or sung half a tone higher. Sharp is often represented by the symbol #.

note というのは音符ですね。

半音上がるのか下がるのか、どっちでしたか。

そう、半音上がるのがシャープです。

それでは下がるのはなんだったか覚えていますか？

a musical note that is one semitone lower than a particular note

Flat is used after a letter representing a musical note to show that the note should be played or sung half a tone lower than the note which otherwise matches that letter. Flat is often represented by the symbol ♭. after the letter.

ごちゃごちゃ書いてありますが、フラット（♭）が半音下がる記号です。

シャープにもフラットにも出てきた semitone が半音ということですね。

In Western music, a semitone is the smallest interval between two musical notes. Two semitones are equal to one tone.

ピアノなどでは半音上がったり下がったりするのが音階の最小単位ですね。当然のことながら、半音2つ分が一音です。
