胴に履かないのにトランクス

メールマガジンでは branch を取り上げました。
枝ですね。
branch をもっと深く見てみようかとも思ったのですが、とりあえず説明文に出てきた trunk を見てみましょう。
結構いろいろな意味があります。それも身近なものばかり。

The trunk of a tree is the large main stem from which the branches grow.

木の幹の部分ですね。
でも、トランクと聞いて一番先に思いつくのはこれではないでしょうか。

The trunk of a car is a covered space at the back or front in which you put luggage or other things. (AM; in BRIT, use boot)

注釈にあるように、イギリス英語では boot を使います。
車のトランクのことです。
大きなかばんのこともトランクって言いますよね。

ヒトの胴体ですね。
胴に履くわけじゃないのにトランクスなんですね。
